Fifth Sunday of Easter: A solid foundation
“Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame”
(1 Peter 2:6).
A cornerstone lies at the foundation of a building. It is often laid with a formal ceremony, bearing the date when the building began. Jesus is the cornerstone of the Church and Christian society. One of his famous parables gives assurance the building will stand if it is built on rock. He designated Peter as a rock, to be a significant part of the foundation. Our Catholic faith has endured religious storms, persecutions and many struggles for twenty centuries. It still stands tall: proclaiming faith to the world, resting securely on its original cornerstone. Recently we have witnessed the weakening and collapse of many trusted structures in our society. But we have confidence that adverse winds cannot topple nor raging waters erode our Christian faith, for it rests on a solid foundation.
We praise you, Jesus, our spiritual cornerstone.
